The EPA has three components which need to be passed:

        • Knowledge test
        • Professional discussion
        • Practical skills test in their chosen pathway (workshop based).

A new Scheme of Work (SOW) has been devised with the aim of being able to more effectively support all learners through their apprenticeships.

Rather than applying a ‘3-year approach’ (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year), the SOW has been broken down into 5 separate stages. Each stage allows the opportunity to fully assess the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) of an individual learner and to be able to accurately gauge and verify a learner’s progress and current competence levels.

This is achieved through ‘end-of-phase’ assessments – which test and measure KSBs, at an earlier stage focusing more on knowledge and behaviours to embed these as early as possible, with some skills criteria, as the programme moves on the focus on practical skills assessments at the end of phases verifies learning and competence.
