Course Overview
This 5 day course is a challenging course that focuses on the fundamental tools and concepts of Linux and Unix.
Students gain proficiency using the command line. Beginners develop a solid foundation in Unix, while advanced users discover patterns and fill in gaps in their knowledge. Like all Guru Labs courses, the course material is designed to provide extensive hands-on experience.
Topics include: basic file manipulation; basic and advanced filesystem features; I/O redirection and pipes; text manipulation and regular expressions; managing jobs and processes; vi, the standard Unix editor; automating tasks with shell scripts; managing software; secure remote administration; and more.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Configure and manage kernel modules, device files, udev rules, and firmware updates
- Administer systemd services, unit files, targets, and service sandboxing features
- Configure GRUB2 boot loader settings and troubleshoot the full boot process from BIOS/UEFI through systemd targets
- Manage software packages and repositories using RPM, dnf, and zypper
- Partition disks, create and maintain filesystems, and configure mount options and disk quotas
- Deploy and manage LVM volumes, thin provisioning, and software RAID arrays with mdadm
- Configure NFS, autofs, iSCSI initiators, and SAN multipathing for remote storage access
- Manage user accounts, groups, password policies, and PAM authentication stacks
- Implement security policies using SELinux, AppArmor, firewalld, and file ACLs
- Configure IPv4 and IPv6 networking including bonding, teaming, VLANs, and DHCP services
- Administer system logging with rsyslog, the systemd journal, and Cockpit
- Monitor system performance with sar, vmstat, and iostat, and diagnose failures using rescue environments.

Prerequisites

Students should be comfortable with computers. No familiarity with Linux or other Unix operating systems is required.
